GLEN TIERNEY Glen was 11 years of age when he commenced dancing, though rather begrudgingly, having been commandeered by Mum, to partner his twin sister Karen, who had attended a dance class in Sydney the week before. Following in his parent's and older sibling's footsteps, he much preferred golf, though did find some appreciation of dance, recalling his first competition, partnering Karen, dancing the Gypsy Tap at the Sydney Town Hall, the wrong way around the floor, but having a great time doing it. Soon after, Karen decided to give up but Glen surprisingly wanted to continue, partnering his cousen Jeanette, with whom he danced for some time during his younger years, both medals and competition. He grew to love dance as a sport, having a half hour lesson once a week, next to no practice with Jeanette, turning up at the competition to have heaps of fun. Under the tuition of Adele Holland OA, Glen would continue in championship dance with a handful of partners including Karen Phillips (now McDonald) who is principal of her own school of dance in the USA & Brigit Sedman (now Tabone). 1979 saw Glen travel to Britain with Alex Schembri & Tony Gauci, to name a few, to experience the British Open in Blackpool for the 1st time. This experience took his steadily growing love of dance to a whole new level. After a short trip home, Glen returned to England for a scheduled 6 weeks, staying however for the following 9 years. During this time, Glen would meet Anne-Marie Powell (now Farley) who enjoyed a hugely successful dance partnership with her brother Steve. He was stunned when Anne-Marie asked him to partner her, not considering his dancing anywhere near the level of her's. This new partnership would give Glen the opportunity to work with the greats of the dance industry, such as Anthony Hurley, Bill and Bobby Irvine, Peter Eggleton, Richard & Janet Gleave & Benny Tolmeyer, improving his dancing immeasurably. Working with Mick Stylianos & Walter Laird, gave them the opportunity to compete successfully in Latin and 10 Dance events Ballroom would be their strength though, making the top 6 in the 1982, 83, 84 & 85 British, UK and International Opens and taking the 1984 & 85 British National Amateur & Western European Amateur Ballroom titles, along with making the top 6 in the 1985 World Amateur Ballroom Championships Glen fondly remembers the thrill of sharing the floor with the likes of John Wood & Anne Lewis, and Donnie Burns & Gaynor Fairweather. Another fond memory are the times when a number of dancers would pile into a handful of cars, driving across Europe to attend all manner of events, having a ball in the process amd building life long friendships Another experience that Glen relishes during this time, is his opportunity to work with the great Alex Moore in his studio in Kingston. While Glen worked mainly with Elizabeth Romain, he would drive Alex to & from a great many events, loving the chance to chat to the great man along the way 1985 would see Glen and Anne-Marie invited to dance at the British Open Modern Sequence Championships. They had never had the opportunity to participate in this event previously due to its timing on the championship calendar amd were delighted to take the title in 85 After some 8 years of competeing in the Amateur field with Anne-Marie, they turned professional, being examined for his Associate Diplomas by Gordon Little Their incredible success would continue on the professional floor, being semi finalists at the World & British Open Ballroom Championships, Runner-up champions at the 1986 British Professional Rosong Star Championships & top 6 at the 86 USA Open Ballroom Championships. 1986 would also see them take the South Pacific and Australian Open Professional Ballroom titles One of Glen's very first appointments as a professional dancer, was an invitation to lecture at the Dutch Professional Congress. He understood that extraordinary standard that was expected and turned to Sarah Francis, for assistance in his preparation, who he credits with giving him an understanding of how to simplify dance & make it attainable to all. 1987 saw Glen return home & Anne-Marie emigrate to Sydney. They were immediately invited to teach all over Australia, including at the New Embassy Ballroom in Carlisle, by Keith & Marita Withers. During this time, Glen would meet Debbie-Anne Humphrey's, who with her partner Nick Kosovich, was a to National 10 Dance champion. This same year would see Glen awarded the Brolga Award for "Professional Competitor Of The Year" & the award for "Outstanding International Achievement" from the Australian Dancing Board. Successfully defending their South Pacific & Australian titles, Glen & Anne-Marie would add the 1987 Australasian Professional Ballroom title to their impressive collection. Such was the success of their first visit to WA that Marita Withers contacted them, asking them to move to WA permanently which they did in 88. Soon after their move, Anne-Marie would meet Roger Farley & Glen would join forces with Humphrey's Dance Studio & commence what would become an incredible partnership with Debbie-Anne, embarking upon a hugely successful cabaret and exhibition dance career, travelling throughout Australia and Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia & the Phillipines, to name a few 1989 saw Glen & Debbie-Anne become partners in Humphrey's with Len and Pam, whom he credits with teaching him how to be a more complete professional, teaching all levels of dance to all ages. The Tierney clan would expand in 1998 with the birth of their son Hunter followed by Paige in 2000. Retiring from exhibition they focussed on teaching and adjudicating with Glen's extensive judging invitations being nothing short of impressive including Youth, Adult & Senior Amateur Ballroom and Latin Championships along with Professional Standard (Ballroom) & 10 Dance Championships throughout Australia, Asia and Europe, at local, National & World level Add to this an equally impressive invitation list as a guest lecturer throughout Australia and around the World from 1997 through to 2023 amd Glen is indeed an International dancer at all levels. Glen continues to teach, coach, mentor, adjudicate, examine and help develop the future of the industry both here in Australia and Globally, following in the footsteps of his mentors Adele Holland OA, Len & Pam Humphreys OAM, Anthony Hurley & Sarah Francis, sharing the love of dance that he had enjoyed throughout his amazingly successful career. |
